The focus of this workshop is an introduction to the world of Clown with no previous experience necessary.
Dr. Dashia Magee, together with Aitor Basauri, will lead a variety of exercises that will help us explore and find our own personal “Clown”. Specifically, we will unpack and explore the meaning of the “Clown Impulse”, how Clowns connect with the audience, and the use of play in devising Clown numbers. Overall, this workshop is an opportunity to laugh and use that laughter as the basis for understanding this art form.
We hope this workshop is a way of introducing artists from the Global Majority to clowning and of Spymonkey’s Theatre of the Funny practice.
Dashia is an LA based Clown and an educator with a speciality in Curriculum Studies, Learning and Development in Adult Education and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (D.E.I.) Studies. For the last 3 years Dashia has been supporting Spymonkey on our continued journey of creating safe and inclusive spaces for students, including acting as an advocate for students who may want additional support in understanding clowning from a Global Majority perspective.
We recognise the lack of access and options into the industry for people from racialised backgrounds. For this workshop, we specifically welcome :

My name is Dr. Dashia Magee. I am an educator, writer, and professional clown based in Los Angeles. While studying comedy (specifically Improv, Character, and Sketch) at The Upright Citizen Brigade, I was first introduce to Clown. I’ve been able to use Clown to express my frustrations of being a public school teacher, the overturning of Roe vs. Wade, and the racism that occurs in Black Woman’s sexual health and reproductive rights. And through further study and reflection, clowning has also become a spiritual practice of the embodiment of the archetypal trickster. Thus, clowning for me has been (and probably always will be) experienced as a source of spirit that brings light to the darkness through laughter. My one-woman Clown show, Donkey: A Teacher’s Dissent Into Madness was recognized by The Black Woman’s Comedy Festival, UCB Spank Sessions, and most recently chosen for the 2023 Elysian Theatre’s Spaghetti Festival. I’ve also wrote, directed, and starred in Dr. Magee Clown Shorts. Besides clowning, I have also co-wrote and starred in an award winning web series, Staying Together, played my one and only slave in #TMI, and have been in countless Sketches and Improv shows throughout Los Angeles.
