Time Out review
★★★★ Joyously out there kids’ show about a group of bickering hair follicles from stage comedy legends Spymonkey With ‘Hairy’,
Comedy-meets-rock-band-meets-punk-clown-mayhem, HAIRY is a playful and frankly laughable exploration of that most versatile and significant feature of human anatomy.
HAIRY is the first show created specially for young people by Spymonkey, the UK’s longest-running comedy theatre company. It will have few words and great generous dollops of bold visual comedy.
Hair seems to be everywhere! And sprouting in the most unlikely places! Hair to be styled, waxed, fashioned, shaved, plucked, jeri-curled, dreadlocked and shorn. Hair to be striking, funny, scary, surprising, gorgeous and greasy. Long, short, curly, straight, thick, thin, in-growing, up-covered, unwanted or removed. Where’s it going to turn up next?!
Fear not! Our four super-hairos are on hand to untangle it all for you. Their super-powers mean they can grow hair ANYWHERE on their body! Specialists in all things hairy, this band of bristly buddies are ready to launch themselves fearlessly on a hairy journey of discovery.
One thing is for sure: It’s going to get HAIRY!

Spymonkey have been making Theatre of the Funny for grown ups for more than two decades. Although we’ve all had some experience making funny work for younger audiences this is the first time we’ve made something specifically with them in mind.
Looking around us at work for young people we see wealth of stage versions of well-known illustrated children’s books, or the regularly mined canon of classice children’s literature. So we think this is a brilliant opportunity to use our experience to make a piece of laugh-out-loud, extraordinary and inventive theatre for young people that stands up on its own terms.
We’ve made our name being extremely un-sensible, silly and anarchic work and we relish the chance to bring that sensibility to work for younger audiences.
Spymonkey make funny theatre – performances that set out unapologetically to make audiences laugh. But ‘funny’ also covers the strange, the odd, the misfitting, eccentric and unique, all of which we cherish in the sort of theatre that we like to make. Which is why we call our work Theatre of the Funny.
HAIRY will be another first for us as a company: the two of us working as directors rather than as performers, creating the show for a quartet of amazingly skilled, multitalented and diverse physical comedy performers. (They are actually way more talented than we ever were, which is exciting!) The work will be created using the intensely collaborative devising methods that have been the trademark of our work.
We’ve always had huge amounts of pleasure to transform ourselves with wigs, hairpieces, moustaches, fake beards, eyebrows and chest wigs. We wanted to make a show that takes that transformative pleasure to new heights of invention, aided (people who know our work would expect nothing less) by songs, puppetry and dance. And obviously an awful lot of hair.”
